EDUCATION AND LITERACY
Driven by the mutual desire to promote literacy and readership awareness among Filipino children, Buklat Aklat Mobile Library Project was launched in 1998 and revived in late 2004. Buklat Aklat is a collection of about 500 books covering the fields of Math, Science, Philippine Literature and Culture that visits public elementary schools, public libraries and barangays nationwide. The mobile library gives every Filipino child the chance to freely browse and read good books. The responses from each school visited across the country were really overwhelming since many of them do not have libraries at all. I
NBSFI holds the responsibility for the continuous implementation of the Buklat Aklat Mobile Library Project as its acts as the official socio-civic arm of NBSI. The alarming problem of inaccessibility to basic services in education has also prompted NBSFI to venture to other projects that aims to help the underprivileged acquire rightful access to quality education. These projects are not only limited to the mobile library but also has extended to book and school supplies donation programs.

SAVING THE SEAS
Haribon Foundation is a membership-based organization founded in 1972 by birdwatching enrthusiasts. The word Haribon was coined from Haring Ibon or King of Birds which is the Philippine Eagle. In 1984, it became a foundation. It is the pioneer environmental organization working for the conservation of natural resources both in the terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Its projects are implemented with the help of partners in local government units and local communities.
Concerns on the protection and conservation of marine resources has led Haribon to organize one of the biggest organizations of fisherfolk called PAMANA. It has undertaken various marine projects like the mangrove management in Bolinao, Pangasinan and in San Salvador Island, Masinloc, Zambales. Haribon has also spearheaded the marine snactuary monitoring in Lanuza Bay in Surigao del Sur and also did baseline studies on Biodiversity Conservation and Development Programs of Cebu Landscapes and Seascapes. These projects are funded by grants from the European Union and Cives Mundi, a Spanish organization.
The ultimate goal in initiating these projects is to ensure sustainability, conservation and proper management of marine resources so that needs of communities dependent on them are met as well as that of future generations.
The challenges faced by Haribon in all its projects is engaging all stakeholders in the management of their resources. There is the need for massive IEC campaign to make them understand the goals behind the projscts and also build their capacity to continue managing their resources once Haribon turns over the project to them.
Haribon would like to engage the public in proper fishing practices (no dynamites; no cyanide; no introduction of invasive species like janitor fish; no ekectro-fishing); in the establishment of marine sanctuaries; in protecting coral reefs; in keeping beaches clean from litter and garbage; among others.

ADOPT A HOMELESS PET
Animals feel pain and suffering. Companion animals are not meant to survive on their own on the streets. They have been domesticated and are totally dependent on their guardians for their basic needs and more importantly, for love and affection.
An all-too-often sad scene in our country is that pets are dumped on the streets when irresponsible owners give up on these animals at the slightest indication of a skin problem or when puppies grow up not as "cute" as they expected them to be.
In a country where animal welfare awareness is low, homeless animals suffer greatly - often dying slowly of sickness and hunger in the streets.
While people continue to see breeding and pet shops as viable sources of pets, not many turn to shelters and City Pounds when they want to get a companion animal for their family.
PAWS has an animal shelter in Quezon City where rescued animals are rehabilitated, neutered or spayed and trained before they are adopted out. (www.mefindhome.org)
Here, rescued animals are given a chance at a new life. And in their own way - for the love and devotion that they bring - the animals 'rescue' those who adopt them, too.
For those interested in adopting a shelter animal, please visit The PAWS Animal Rehabilitation Center (PARC), Aurora Blvd., Katipunan Valley, Loyola Heights, Quezon City, Tuesdays to Saturdays 1pm to 5pm. Telefax:
